Mind Gym: Building Confidence and Motivation in Tweens and Teens

You've tried the conversations. You've set the boundaries. You've maybe even threatened to take the phone away for good. And still — your tween or teen seems stuck: low motivation, glued to screens, more connected to friends online than to anyone at home, and resistant to the idea that they might need help.

This is exactly the gap Mind Gym was designed to fill. It's not a classroom lecture, not a punishment, and not traditional therapy in disguise. It's a structured six-week group programme where tweens and teenagers build the skills that school and home conversations alone often can't reach.

What is Mind Gym?

Mind Gym is Vita Mea Clinic's group wellbeing programme for young people. Running in small groups at our clinic in Mosta, each session combines guided discussion, practical exercises, and peer connection — all facilitated by experienced practitioners who understand how to engage tweens and teens without talking down to them.

The name says it all: just as you train your body at a gym, Mind Gym helps young people train their minds — building emotional strength, confidence, and habits that support them through the pre-teen and teenage years.

Two programmes for two different stages

Mind Gym for Tweens (ages 9–12)

The pre-teen years are when many of the patterns parents worry about first appear — attitude, screen dependency, friendship drama, and a growing distance from family. The tween programme focuses on emotional literacy, friendship skills, screen balance, building confidence early, and learning to express feelings without shutting down or lashing out.

Mind Gym for Teenagers (ages 13–16)

Teenagers face a different set of challenges: identity, motivation, exam pressure, peer influence, social media, and the push-pull of wanting independence while still needing support. The teen programme goes deeper into self-esteem, goal-setting, managing stress and mood, navigating friendships and social media, and preparing for the transitions ahead.

What participants work on

  • Understanding and managing emotions — frustration, anxiety, mood swings
  • Building motivation, focus, and follow-through
  • Healthier habits around phones, gaming, and social media
  • Confidence in friendships and social situations
  • Gratitude, empathy, and seeing beyond their own perspective
  • Communication skills — expressing needs without aggression or shutdown
  • Resilience and a more positive mindset for school and life
Many young people find it easier to open up alongside peers who feel the same way — without the intensity of sitting one-to-one with a therapist.

Who is Mind Gym for?

Mind Gym suits tweens and teens who are struggling with motivation, confidence, screen habits, attitude, or social skills — but aren't in acute crisis. It's especially helpful for young people who resist the idea of individual therapy but could thrive in a group setting with peers facing similar challenges.

Parents often join our parenting support programme at the same time — working on boundaries and communication at home while their child builds skills in the group.

What parents can expect

Each Mind Gym programme runs over six weekly sessions with limited places. Parents receive a brief overview at the start and end so you know what's being covered and how to support progress at home — without sitting in the room. Confidentiality is part of the group agreement: what's shared stays shared.

Programmes run periodically throughout the year at Vita Mea Clinic in Mosta. You can read full details on our Mind Gym page, or enquire about the next available dates for Mind Gym for Tweens and Mind Gym for Teenagers.

If you're not sure whether Mind Gym, individual therapy, or parenting support is the right starting point, get in touch — we'll help you find the best fit for your family.

Frequently asked questions

What age groups does Mind Gym cover?

Mind Gym for Tweens is for ages 9–12, and Mind Gym for Teenagers is for ages 13–16. If your child is on the cusp, we'll help you choose the best fit.

Is Mind Gym the same as therapy?

Mind Gym is a structured skills-building group programme, not individual therapy. It's ideal for young people who need practical tools and peer support. If deeper mental health concerns emerge, we'll discuss whether one-to-one therapy would help alongside or instead.

How do I enrol my child in Mind Gym in Malta?

Enquire via the contact page on our website or call +356 9985 4942. Places are limited and programmes run periodically — we'll let you know the next available dates.

Can parents attend Mind Gym sessions?

Mind Gym is for young people only — that privacy helps them open up. Parents receive an overview at the start and end of the programme, and can access separate parenting support sessions at the same time.
