Mind Gym for Tweens & Teens

Mind Gym is Vita Mea's group programme for young people who need more than a lecture at home — a safe, structured space to build the mindset, habits, and emotional skills that school and screens don't teach.

Many parents notice the same pattern as their child moves into the tween and teen years: motivation drops, phones become the centre of social life, friends matter more than family, and conversations at home turn into stand-offs or silence. Lectures about gratitude, responsibility, and screen time rarely land — and one-to-one therapy can feel too intense for a young person who insists nothing is wrong.

Mind Gym was created for exactly this gap. It's a structured group programme — not a classroom, not a punishment, and not therapy in disguise — where tweens and teenagers work alongside peers on the skills that matter most right now: managing emotions, building confidence, finding motivation, navigating friendships and social media, and developing empathy and gratitude in a world that doesn't always model them.

Programmes run at Vita Mea Clinic in Mosta in small groups with limited places. We offer separate tracks for tweens (ages 9–12) and teenagers (ages 13–16), because what a ten-year-old needs is different from what a fifteen-year-old needs — even when the parent concerns sound similar.

Is this right for you?

This work may be a good fit if any of these sound familiar:

  • Your child lacks motivation and seems stuck in low gear
  • Screen time, gaming, or social media dominates their free time
  • They've become withdrawn, self-centred, or dismissive at home
  • Friends and online life matter more than family connection
  • You want them to build confidence and emotional skills in a peer setting
  • One-to-one therapy feels like too big a step right now

What we can help with

  • Low motivation and difficulty starting or finishing tasks
  • Building confidence, self-esteem, and a stronger sense of identity
  • Emotional regulation — managing frustration, anxiety, and mood swings
  • Healthier relationships with screens, social media, and gaming
  • Peer pressure, friendship dynamics, and social confidence
  • Gratitude, empathy, and perspective-taking
  • Communication skills — expressing needs without aggression or shutdown
  • Resilience, focus, and a more positive mindset for school and life
  • Feeling less alone with struggles other teens share too

What to expect

1

Small groups, safe atmosphere

Each programme runs over six weekly sessions in a small group at Vita Mea Clinic. Sessions are facilitated by experienced practitioners who create a space where young people can talk honestly — without being judged or lectured.

2

Practical tools, not just talk

Participants work on real skills: understanding their emotions, managing stress, setting personal goals, navigating friendships and social media, and building habits that support motivation and wellbeing.

3

Age-appropriate tracks

Mind Gym for Tweens (ages 9–12) focuses on emotional literacy, friendship skills, screen balance, and building confidence early. Mind Gym for Teenagers (ages 13–16) goes deeper into identity, motivation, peer pressure, digital habits, and preparing for the transitions ahead.

Our approach

Mind Gym draws on evidence-based approaches to youth wellbeing — including cognitive-behavioural tools, mindfulness, and group psychoeducation — delivered in a way that feels engaging rather than clinical. We don't label young people or talk down to them. The group format itself is part of the therapy: normalising struggles, building social skills, and showing tweens and teens they're not the only ones finding this stage hard.

Parents receive a brief overview at the start and end of each programme so you know what's being covered and how to support progress at home — without sitting in the room.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Mind Gym and therapy?

Mind Gym is a structured group programme focused on building skills and confidence — ideal for young people who may not need or want individual therapy. If deeper emotional or mental health concerns emerge during the programme, we'll discuss whether one-to-one support would be helpful alongside or instead.

Which age group should my child join?

Mind Gym for Tweens is designed for ages 9–12, and Mind Gym for Teenagers for ages 13–16. If your child is on the cusp, we'll help you choose the best fit based on their maturity and current challenges.

Will my child have to share private things in front of others?

Participation is encouraged but never forced. The group agreement includes confidentiality — what's shared in the room stays in the room. Many young people find it easier to open up alongside peers who feel the same way.

How do I know if Mind Gym is right for my child?

Mind Gym suits tweens and teens who are struggling with motivation, confidence, screen habits, or social skills — but aren't in acute crisis. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you decide whether Mind Gym, individual therapy, or parenting support is the best starting point.

When does the next programme start?

Programmes run periodically throughout the year at Vita Mea Clinic in Mosta. Places are limited — enquire via our contact page or call us to register interest and we'll let you know the next available dates.

Can I attend parenting support alongside Mind Gym?

Absolutely — and many families find this combination works well. While your child builds skills in the group, you can work on boundaries, communication, and connection in parent sessions. See our parenting support page for details.
