Learn about our serviceYou weren’t always this anxious.
I hear that sentence in different forms. “I used to be easy-going.” “I used to sleep.” “I used to say what I thought and not think about it for three days.” People are often surprised by their own history, once they are invited to look at it. The anxiety feels so familiar now that they have started to call it personality. It isn’t always personality. Sometimes it is what a nervous system does when peace has become a job, and the job is theirs.
This is the second piece in *When Peace Depends on You*. If the first article asked when you started doubting yourself, this one asks a neighbouring question: when did you start living on alert?
Keeping the peace, or walking on eggshells
There is a difference, and people who live it usually know the difference in their body before they can say it out loud.
Keeping the peace can be a mature choice. You let a small thing go because the day is already heavy. You choose tone carefully because you love the person and you want the conversation to work. That is care.
Walking on eggshells is different. You monitor the mood before you speak. You adjust the dinner, the volume, the children’s noise, the expression on your face. You run a private weather report from the moment they wake, or from the moment the key turns in the door. You are not choosing kindness. You are trying not to set anything off. The house may look calm. Your body does not feel calm.
- You rehearse ordinary sentences before you say them
- You feel a drop in your stomach when a message arrives, even if the day has been fine
- You are more relaxed when they are out than when they are home
- You have become the translator between them and the children, the in-laws, the friends
- You cannot rest until you know what kind of evening it is going to be
If several of those are true, the anxiety is doing a job. It is trying to keep you safe in a climate that does not feel reliably safe. That does not require a dramatic scene. A raised eyebrow, a silence, a slammed cupboard, a sudden warmth that can be withdrawn — the nervous system learns from small data, repeated.
Why it is easy to blame yourself
Anxious people are often conscientious people. They take responsibility. They read rooms. They were frequently the child who smoothed things over. So when the adult relationship becomes tense, the old skill comes online: *if I manage myself well enough, the weather will hold*.
That story is seductive because it gives you a sense of control. If the problem is your anxiety, you can work on your anxiety. You can breathe, journal, take a walk, tell yourself you are overreacting. Some of that may even help, in the short term. What it cannot do is answer a different question: why does peace depend so heavily on you?
In a reasonably balanced relationship, both people contribute to the temperature of the room. In some dynamics, one person has become the thermostat and the other has become the climate. If you are the thermostat, you will feel anxious. Of course you will. You have been given an impossible task — to regulate someone else’s inner world with your own behaviour.
Malta’s closeness can intensify this. There is often nowhere to be “off duty”. Family gatherings, village feasts, the same supermarket, the same school gate. If the other person is charming in public, your private alertness can look like you are the tense one. You start to believe the public version, because it is the one everyone else sees.
Anxiety that belongs to a relationship
I am careful here, because anxiety has many sources — temperament, health, work, grief, a pandemic we have not all finished metabolising. Not every tight chest is about a partner. The useful test is not “do I have anxiety?” It is “when is it louder?”
Does it rise before they come home and fall when you are with a friend? Does it spike after a particular kind of conversation — the one that starts with your hurt and ends with your character? Do holidays feel like something to survive rather than enjoy? Does your sleep change in their presence?
If the anxiety has a postcode — if it is worse in one house, one car, one relationship — that is worth taking as seriously as any other symptom. Your body may be more accurate than the story you have been told about yourself.
Why does peace depend so heavily on you?
What I am not asking you to do
I am not asking you to confront anyone this week. I am not asking you to announce that you have been walking on eggshells. For some people, naming that out loud in the wrong room is not safer — it is more exposed. There is no prize for being braver than your situation allows.
What I would like you to have is a more accurate sentence. Not “I am an anxious person.” Perhaps: “I became more anxious in this relationship, and that might be information.” Accuracy is not drama. It is the beginning of choice.
If you want a place to look at that sentence with someone who will not take sides in the family WhatsApp, individual therapy at our clinic in Mosta is available in person, by appointment. We can work with the anxiety in the body and with the relationship that may be feeding it. You do not have to decide which it is before you walk in.
The next article in this series is Some arguments can never be won. If you have not read the first, it is here: When did you start doubting yourself?. And if you would rather talk than read, contact the clinic or call +356 9985 4942.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my anxiety is about the relationship?
Look at when it rises and falls. Anxiety that is much louder in one person’s presence, or after a particular kind of conversation, may be tied to that dynamic. Anxiety that is there in every setting may have other roots. Therapy can help you sort this without forcing a conclusion.
Is walking on eggshells the same as being considerate?
Consideration is a choice you can put down. Walking on eggshells is a survival habit — you monitor mood because the cost of getting it wrong feels high. If you cannot rest until you know what kind of evening it will be, that is more than politeness.
Can anxiety therapy help if I stay in the relationship?
Yes. Many people come for the anxiety first. We work with what your body is doing, and with the situation that may be teaching it to stay on alert. You do not have to leave in order to deserve that support.
