Couples & Family Therapy

Relationships are where we feel our highest highs and our deepest hurts. Couples and family therapy gives you a calm, neutral space to be truly heard — and to finally hear each other again.

When the same argument keeps looping, when silence fills the room more often than warmth, or when you love each other but no longer feel like a team — it can feel lonely under the same roof. Couples and family therapy at Vita Mea is a space where every voice is heard, without blame, and where you can start understanding the patterns between you rather than fighting about who's 'right'.

We work with couples at every stage — dating, engaged, married, separating, or rebuilding — and with families navigating conflict, big transitions, or the ripple effects of one person's struggle. You don't need to be in crisis to come. Many people reach out simply because they want to feel close again, or because they want to give their children a calmer home.

Sessions are held in Mosta or online across Malta. We move at a pace that feels safe for everyone in the room — including quieter or younger family members.

Is this right for you?

This work may be a good fit if any of these sound familiar:

  • You keep having the same argument and nothing ever really resolves
  • You feel more like roommates than partners — or more like a battleground than a family
  • Trust has been damaged and you're not sure how to rebuild it
  • A big transition (new baby, move, illness, separation) has shaken your dynamic
  • You want to strengthen your relationship before things get worse

What we can help with

  • Constant arguing or the same conflict on repeat
  • Feeling distant, unheard, or emotionally shut down
  • Rebuilding trust after an affair or a broken promise
  • Communication breakdowns and stonewalling
  • Parenting disagreements and co-parenting after separation
  • Blended-family and step-parenting challenges
  • Major transitions — a new baby, relocation, illness, or loss
  • Intimacy and closeness that has faded over time
  • Supporting a child or teen while the whole family adjusts

What to expect

1

A shared, neutral space

Your first session is about understanding what's bringing you in and what each person hopes will change. No one is 'the problem' — we look at the patterns between you, not the blame.

2

Understanding the cycle

Together we map the recurring loops — who withdraws, who pursues, what gets triggered — so you can recognise them in the moment instead of being swept up by them.

3

New ways of relating

You'll practise real communication tools: expressing needs without attack, listening without defending, and repairing after conflict. Small shifts, practised consistently, change the whole dynamic.

Our approach

Our therapists draw on systemic and family-systems practice, emotionally focused approaches, and Gestalt therapy — always tailored to your relationship rather than a one-size-fits-all script. We hold every voice with equal care.

Sessions are confidential and judgment-free. We're honest about what therapy can and can't do, and we review progress with you regularly so you're never left guessing where things stand.

Frequently asked questions

Do both partners need to attend every session?

Ideally, yes — couples and family work is most effective when everyone involved takes part. That said, individual sessions can sometimes help prepare the ground, and we'll agree the right format for your situation together.

What if my partner won't come?

That's more common than you'd think. Individual work can still shift a relationship, because when one person changes how they respond, the whole dynamic changes too. You're welcome to start on your own — and many partners join later once they see the difference.

Is couples therapy only for relationships in crisis?

Not at all. Many couples come to strengthen an already-good relationship, prepare for marriage or parenthood, or reconnect after a busy season of life. Coming early often means fewer sessions, not more.

How long will we need to come?

It varies. Some couples feel real change within a handful of sessions; others prefer ongoing support through a bigger transition. Couples and family sessions typically run 75–90 minutes. We review progress with you regularly rather than locking you into an open-ended plan.

Do you work with families that include children or teenagers?

Yes. We adapt the format so younger family members feel safe and heard. Sometimes that means sessions with the whole family; sometimes with parents first, then bringing children in when the ground feels steadier.
