What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

The hardest part of therapy is often the bit before it starts: booking the appointment, walking through the door, and wondering what on earth you're supposed to say. If that's where you are, you're in good company. Most people feel some mix of hope, nerves, and self-consciousness before a first session.

At Vita Mea, we try to make that beginning as human and unintimidating as possible. Here's what typically happens — and what doesn't.

Before you arrive

You'll usually have had a brief exchange by phone, email, or our contact form so we know a little about what you're looking for. On the day, give yourself a few spare minutes. Arriving flustered from traffic or parking stress in Mosta doesn't help anyone settle. There's no dress code and no need to prepare a speech.

The first few minutes

We'll welcome you, explain confidentiality in clear language, and make space for practical questions — fees, frequency, online versus in-person, anything that helps you feel oriented. This is also your chance to notice how the room and the therapist feel. Chemistry matters. Therapy works best when you feel reasonably safe with the person opposite you.

What we tend to explore

A first session is mostly about getting to know you. We might ask what brings you now, what life has been like lately, and what you'd hope might feel different. You don't need a diagnosis or a tidy story. Fragments, uncertainty, and “I'm not sure” are all welcome.

  • What's been hardest recently
  • How the difficulty shows up in sleep, work, relationships, or mood
  • What you've already tried
  • Who or what supports you already
  • What you want from therapy — even if that's simply “to feel less stuck”
You don't have to tell everything in the first hour. Trust builds. We go at a pace that respects your nervous system.

What you don't have to do

You don't have to cry to prove you're struggling. You don't have to be interesting. You don't have to know the “root cause”. And you don't have to commit to a long course of therapy on day one. A first session is also an assessment of fit — for you as much as for us.

Ending the session and next steps

Towards the end, we'll reflect on what we've heard and suggest possible ways forward. That might mean booking a follow-up, trying a short piece of focused work, or simply taking time to decide. There's no hard sell. Good therapy starts with informed choice.

How counselling at Vita Mea can help from session one

Even a single conversation can bring relief: naming something out loud, feeling taken seriously, leaving with one clearer next step. Over time, therapy becomes a place to understand patterns, practise new responses, and rebuild a kinder relationship with yourself and others.

If you've been putting it off because the unknown feels bigger than the problem, we understand. When you're ready, get in touch. We'll help you take that first hour gently.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a first therapy session?

Most first sessions last around 50 minutes, similar to ongoing appointments. We'll confirm the length when you book so you know what to expect.

What if I go blank or don't know what to say?

That's extremely common. Your therapist is used to helping the conversation find its way. Silence isn't failure — sometimes it's where the important thing surfaces.

Can I bring someone with me to the first session?

For individual therapy we usually meet one-to-one, though you're welcome to have someone accompany you to the clinic and wait. For couples or family work, we'll agree in advance who attends.
