Have you ever noticed that your relationships keep stumbling over the same stone — needing constant reassurance, pulling away when things get close, or choosing partners who feel exciting but unstable? Attachment theory offers a compassionate way to understand why.

Your attachment style isn't a life sentence. It's a pattern, usually formed early, that can soften and change with awareness and the right support.

What attachment styles are

Attachment styles describe how we learned to seek safety and connection. Broadly, people talk about secure, anxious, avoidant, and sometimes mixed or disorganised patterns. None of these make you “bad at relationships.” They show what your nervous system learned to expect.

Anxious attachment

You may fear abandonment, seek lots of reassurance, and feel unsettled by distance. Conflict can feel catastrophic even when it isn't.

Avoidant attachment

Closeness may feel overwhelming. You might value independence highly, shut down in conflict, or feel smothered when someone wants more emotional access.

Secure attachment

You can move toward connection and also tolerate space. Conflict is uncomfortable but workable, and trust feels more available.

Why this matters in adult love

Attachment patterns show up in how you text, argue, apologise, and decide whether to stay or leave. An anxious–avoidant pairing is especially common — one partner pursues, the other withdraws, and both feel unseen.

Understanding your attachment style isn't about labelling yourself. It's about recognising the protective strategies that once made sense.

Can attachment styles change?

Yes. Secure relating can be learned through consistent, safe relationships — including the therapeutic one. In relationship therapy and couples work, we help you notice your triggers, communicate needs more clearly, and build the safety your system may have missed.

If you're tired of repeating the same relational story, get in touch. Change often begins with understanding, not with forcing yourself to “be less sensitive” or “more open.”

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my partner to do attachment work with me?

No. Individual therapy can shift how you attach and choose. Couples therapy helps when you want to change the pattern together.

Is attachment style the same as personality?

Not exactly. Personality is broader. Attachment is specifically about how you seek safety and connection in close relationships — and it can evolve.

Can therapy help if I keep choosing unavailable partners?

Often yes. When you understand the need underneath the choice, you can start recognising safer, more mutual connections — and tolerate the unfamiliar feeling of them.
